Before we start, please understand that the modules on this page are not designed for first time English learners but for applicants who I assume already finished their high school study. Most of you should already be familiar with the basics - Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs, Subject and Predicate, etc. The modules will just teach you how to effectively organize them to convey a clear message.
Grammar 101 : The Formulas of English Tenses
For grammar and sentence construction, we will only focus on the English tenses for both Active and Passive. This is where we usually make a mistake especially when answering interview questions. Just a bit of crash course, in active sentences, the thing doing the action is the subject of the sentence and the thing receiving the action is the object. Most sentences are active.
In passive sentences, the thing receiving the action is the subject of the sentence and the thing doing the action is optionally included near the end of the sentence.
You can use the passive form if you think that the thing receiving the action is more important or should be emphasized. You can also use the passive form if you do not know who is doing the action or if you do not want to mention who is doing the action.
It is necessary to learn tense forms by heart. The best way is to memorize them in the following formula: Personal pronoun + tense form (I write, he writes, we write, you write, etc.) Memorizing tense forms in such constructions will also help you to memorize basic subject-verb agreement in person and number.
